Ohio State Tight End Jake Stoneburner And Offensive Lineman Jack Mewhort Suspended

Not a good look

More bad news for Jake Stoneburner and Jack Mewhort, as it was announced yesterday that both are suspended from the football team indefinitely. 

While this doesn't tell us how long they could be gone, the task at hand for these guys is to get back into good graces with Urban Meyer. 

Coming into this season, both Mewhort and Stoneburner are looked up to by many as a part of the leadership role in the senior class. What they did wasn't completely terrible, but there do have to be consequences. If it's a game or a couple of weeks away from the team, they're going to have to learn from this moment and be able to look past it and move on.

"The attorney for Ohio State football players Jake Stoneburner and Jack Mewhort told The Dispatch last night that coach Urban Meyer has suspended his clients pending the outcome of their legal problems.

Stoneburner and Mewhort were charged by Shawnee Hills police with obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor.

The two, along with Austin Barnard, who is not a football player, allegedly were caught urinating between buildings near the Bogey Inn about 1:30 a.m. Saturday while walking back to Stoneburner’s family home at Muirfield Village, site of the Memorial Tournament.

All three allegedly ran when first confronted by a police officer shining a flashlight in their direction, but Stoneburner and Mewhort reportedly stopped soon afterward.

He said the two players are “not upset. They’re just kind of trying to remain low-key and focused. Both are 100 percent focused to get this behind them.”

Stoneburner is a senior tight end from Dublin and Mewhort a junior offensive lineman from Toledo."

According to 10TV, Ohio State tight end Jake Stoneburner was arrested today, being charged with obstructing official business.

"According to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, Stoneburner was arrested sometime Saturday by the Shawnee Hills police.

The circumstances of his arrest were not immediately released."

Stoneburner, who attended Dublin Coffman High School, is a tight end and was listed at the top of Urban Meyer's first depth chart of the 2012 season.

Stoneburner was one of the few key playmakers that head coach Urban Meyer called out as a key part to the Buckeye offensive attack for this upcoming season. The hope right now for fans is that this case is not serious.

In 2011, Stoneburner caught 14 passes for 193 yards and scored seven touchdowns. He has caught 37 passes in his first three years at Ohio State.

Update 4:15: SB Nation's Bill Hanstock reports that Jake Stoneburner has been released on bond.

As for the obstructing official business, here's a nice definition for you:

"(A) No person, without privilege to do so and with purpose to prevent, obstruct, or delay the performance by a public official of any authorized act within the public official's official capacity, shall do any act that hampers or impedes a public official in the performance of the public official's lawful duties.

(B) Whoever violates this section is guilty of obstructing official business. Except as otherwise provided in this division, obstructing official business is a misdemeanor of the second degree. If a violation of this section creates a risk of physical harm to any person, obstructing official business is a felony of the fifth degree."

Update #2 8:05: It has now been released from 10TV that offensive lineman Jack Mewhort was also arrested with Stoneburner.

"Tight end Jake Stoneburner and offensive lineman Jack Mewhort were arrested at about 9:30 a.m. by the Shawnee Hills police near the Bogey Inn, 10TV News reported.

A third man, Austin Barnard, was also charged. He is not affiliated with the football program.

Police told 10TV News that two officers saw the three men who they believed were urinating between buildings. The officers attempted to talk with them but they ran away.

Two of them were captured while they were crouched in between vehicles, police said. The third person was found hiding in nearby woods after officers threatened to use a police dog."

All three were released about a little more than an hour later after posting $2,000 bond, according to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

Sitting Down With 2013 4-Star TE Recruit Adam Breneman

TE's aren't just for blocking

On Tuesday, we told you about Ohio State offering 2013 tight end Adam Breneman, and all about how he was the top tight end in the class of '13. Urban has shown time and time again that the tight end is a very important part of his offense, so we know this is a recruit that Meyer really wants.

The high school standout has around 20 offers and was also recently invited and accepted an invitation to play in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Game down in Florida next January. Breneman is 6'5'', 220 lbs and has the size to come into Ohio State and play almost right away. Breneman also has some very good speed for a guy his size and seems to be the perfect fit for an offense that will focus a lot of attention on the tight end.

We talked with Adam on Wednesday, a day after his offer came in. Hear his thoughts on Ohio State and the recruiting process overall after the jump.

Breneman has some speed

Ohio State and Urban Meyer are continuing their quest on the recruiting trail by dipping into the 2013 class. 

This time in the form of top rated tight end Adam Breneman.

Meyer and the Buckeyes join the likes of Alabama, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Penn State, South Carolina, Stanford and Virginia in offering the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Breneman. The Camp Hill (Pa.) Cedar Cliff standout checks in as the country’s No. 32 prospect overall according to 247Sports 2013 recruiting rankings.

Breneman has been been an absolute dynamic player these past two seasons. The future Under Armour All-American caught 72 passes for 1,120 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior, following up a sophomore campaign of 59 receptions for 863 yards and eight scores.

Early in the process, Breneman doesn't seem to have any favorites. In the past he’s taken visits to the campuses at Alabama, Boston College, Maryland, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Rutgers and Virginia. Coach Meyer and the rest of the coaching staff have been in "constant" contact with Breneman, and it so far it sounds like Breneman is taking it all in right now. 

Urban has shown in the past that he likes tight ends that can move, and change a game quickly. Meyer loves the tight ends that aren’t big and slow, and word is that he is going full force on getting Breneman to end up being a Buckeye.

Tim Hinton Officially Hired As Ohio State Tight Ends Coach

According to Bill Greene, Ohio State and Urban Meyer have officially hired Notre Dame's running backs coach, Tim Hinton as an assistant coach/tight ends coach. Tim Hinton entered his 30th year of coaching in 2011, including 16 years at the collegiate level, and second as the Notre Dame running backs coach. He was an assistant coach the last six seasons at Cincinnati and served as the Bearcats' running backs coach in five of those years.

Born April 12, 1960, Hinton earned a bachelor's degree in industrial education from Wilmington in 1982 and received a master's degree in educational policy and leadership from Ohio State in 1987. His wife, Bev, and he have two daughters, Dawn and Drew.

While attending Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, Hinton launched his coaching career, serving as an assistant coach at Amanda-Clearcreek High School in Amanda, Ohio, from 1978-80. That led to Hinton becoming a student assistant coach at Wilmington in 1981 and then he coached Wilmington's tight ends and wide receivers from 1982-84. Hinton helped his alma mater to two league crowns and a pair of appearances in the NAIA playoffs.

So how does Hinton fit in as a Buckeye?

Hinton's first exposure to major college football came as a graduate assistant at Ohio State from 1985-86. Under head coach Earle Bruce, Hinton was on staff for two bowl game appearances and the 1986 team finished 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten Conference, earning a share of the Big Ten championship.

Interesting note: Hinton is the one who recruited Taylor Decker to ND. Could Decker follow?

Still hurts

Ohio State has a tradition of having great tight ends, tight ends who sometimes don't get the credit or catches they deserve to see...Ben Hartsock, Ryan Hamby, John Frank, Fred Pagac, Sr., and Jake Ballard. Yes, we all remember Hamby's drops in the lost to Texas in Columbus, but he still came through in other moments we needed him.

The player I see having the most potential as a big impact player this season is Tight End Jake Stoneburner. After having a break out year from 2009 (2 receptions, 30 yards) with 21 receptions for 222 yards a year ago and 3 receptions for 39 yards in the Sugar Bowl, the fire has been stoked. Add in a 5 game suspension for your leading wide-receiver and the loss of Dane Sanzenbacher, and you have a situation that might just come unglued.

Nick Vannett becomes the 16th.

The Buckeyes picked up their 16th member of the 2011 recruiting class, a day after they got their first of the 2012 year. Vannett chose OSU over offers from Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Iowa, Penn State, Oregon, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and others. The 6-6/230 Vannett becomes the second tight end to verbal to this class, and hopes to be a key cog in the offense. 


This is a great pick up for the staff and the team. Vannett was ranked as the 8th best TE according to ESPN, and seems like a viable threat. Of course, being Ohio State, he will mostly be used for blocking.

Spring Finals: Tight-End.

We all know by now that spring has come and gone, football wise that is, so we will be taking a look into all the positions, tell you how they did, and where they might be this fall. Today's topic is Tight-End.

The Tight-End position is adored by everyone. Except Ohio State. Since 2003, when Ben Hartsock (33) and Ryan Hamby (18) combined for 51 catches, OSU tight ends have averaged 18.5 receptions a season. How's that for a stat? I don't know if Tressel has run away from using the tight-end because of things like this (look for 2:28), or because they are just too good of blockers not to use every play. Either way, we have too much talent from this group not to get some balls thrown this way this year. It truthful all starts with Jake Stoneburner, the WR converted TE.
