Utah withstood the initial barrage of plays from Cal as well as their mistakes just as the viewers have withstood the barrage of nonsense being dished out by the announcers. And having settled down, the Utah offense is taking the Cal defense apart. Over pursuit by the Cal linebackers (like bears gravitating towards a pot of honey) hasnt helped them either.
Utah has a true freshman Jordan Wynn at the QB position and he has settled down now. I've seen him make almost every throw - in the flat, along the sideline with the pocket rolling, fade route along the sideline, bullet down the middle.
That raises the question for me - Is Nick Siciliano the right quarterback coach for us? Like kids quibbling over Christmas toys I am going to ask - Why is our talent, Pryor, not even close in progression to some of these true freshman? Remember that Vandenberg kid from Iowa as another example. Here we are still resorting to zone read plays as our coach doesnt trust his QB to throw (to his own team mates of course). Or if Siciliano is OK then is Pryor just not going to be able to be a pocket passer??
OK sorry - back to Utes vs Bears. If this score and trend holds, this will be the second successive PAC-10 loss to a MWC team. This will be a reversal of fortunes for the PAC-10 from last year where the conference performed very well in the bowl season. The Utes have the Bears where they would like em - behind by 2 scores which means the Bears will have to pass more. Less of Shane Vereen, their fine running back. Lets see if the 3rd year starter for Cal can respond.
And no Ian - Governor Arnie did not show up to root for the Bears ("Lets go Bears").

Haha sorry :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like the MWC is really trying to make a case they deserve an automatic BCS bid..or a playoff?
If Airforce beats Houston and TCU knocks off Iowa (ahem..) then yeah ... then the drumbeats will only grow louder for the MWC to be an AQ BCS conference. I personally dont like the rule allowing upto 2 teams from a conference to play in BCS games. Whittle it down to 1 and make room for the MWC and other deserving teams.
ReplyDeleteI really shudn't post without having at least 3 cups of coffee isnt it. Cos its tough for TCU to knock off Iowa as I mentioned in my earlier comment especially since THEY DONT PLAY IOWA. Sorry - Had a Mark May moment there
