Spring Finals: Wide Receiver

We all know by now that spring has come and gone, football wise that is, so we will be taking a look into all the positions, tell you how they did, and where they might be this fall. Today's topic is Wide Receiver.

The Ohio State wide receivers have had some pretty good cores in the past, including Santonio Holmes, TG2, Gonzo, Hall, and more. The 2010 group is looking to make a statement that they can be one of the groups in that list itself. The receivers always play an important role at Ohio State, but this year, they have to do work to impress. We start with Mr. Posey.

Depth Chart Prediction
  1. DeVier Posey - Posey was known around the campus as a decent receiver, but always battling with Sanzenbacher for that first spot. Some say he never really was going to live up to his potential. Well, he did that and more last season for the Buckeyes. In the Rose Bowl, he was on fire going for 8 catches for 101 yards. He also added a touchdown. He is looking to have a fantastic year in 2010
  2. Dane Sanzenbacher - Now just because Posey won the job, doesn't mean the 2nd string can't be just as good. Which personally, I think he is. Dane Sanzenbacher was always one of those rays of light when things seemed to be headed downward. (See Penn St. 2008). Sanzenbacher has slowly become a go-to target, and he doesn't shy away from it either.
  3. Taurian Washington - It's about time that T-Wash earn his stripes. I think after all these springs of doing good and falls of doing not so good, Taurian is ready for some action on the field. I think he can beat out the talent of Duron Carter simply because Carter has been tagged the new Ray Small for now. Here's to him going out with a bang.
  4. Duron Carter - Just a sophomore, so he's not done yet, but Duron Carter is slowly falling down the depth charts. If he can stay out of academic trouble the rest of this year, thing will look up. For now, Carter has to prove he's a good teammate on or off the field.
  5. Grant Schwartz - Grant takes after Sanzenbacher a bit when it comes to effort. If he takes some more time to develop into a great receiver, he might stay ahead of the talent that is looming below him. For now, he can hold it down.
  6. Many - There are too many receivers to put them in specific order. Plus, we haven't even begun to take about James Louis, who I have a feeling could be REAL good.
How They Did

DeVier Posey: Posey is best friends with Terrelle Pryor. Sort of random, but this is only the second season he and TP get to duke it out the field together. You saw what they can do when they are both on fire (Oregon). This bond only got stronger during the spring, and you can look forward to a spectacular season from DP. Oh, and of course, TP+DP=TD.

Dane Sanzenbacher: As I said earlier, Sanzenbacher is a reliable target, and provided TP with some of his first major catches way back in 2008. If Sanz and Posey are on the same page, they should both be a part of a ridiculous core. The spring was good to Sanz, and he worked quietly on refining his skills so that they can be the tag-team everybody wants. I like the way Dane plays, and he will continue to do so simply because he's a hard worker.

Taurian Washington: If I was Washington, right from game 1 against Marshall, I would do everything I could not to drop a pass, and then cut up field like it's your last time. This is his senior year, so he's got to finish strong. If he can be consistent, then maybe he can show why Tressel should have stuck with him in some of the games last year. The spring is in love with T-Wash, as he does his best around that time, especially the Spring Game. He's got to have the final step and carry it over to the fall now.

Duron Carter: He didn't get to see the Rose Bowl lights, or that trophy before it got back home. Instead Duron sat at home, watching. This season he vows to end it differently. I believe he can, but it starts in the spring. Duron didn't start in the spring, because of academics again. So, he's in a dilemma. How can he prove that he deserves playing time when no one has seen him play in 2010? (literally). He's got a mountain of work to do, but I believe in him. No Ray Smallness for him. Please.

Grant Schwartz: Grant Schwartz had a good spring, and will continue to do good work. I think once he proves himself in a game as a receiver, more opportunities will show themselves. Plus, there is always a chance for injury. He needs to be ready, and I like that he has taken on the role with no dissatisfaction. I hope he keeps up the good work.

Overall Depth: A-

This core has been said to be one of the best in the Big Ten, and the country. With Posey and Sanz at the left and right, they have some pretty good talent right behind them. I think this group could go far, and with their depth, could help us even more in the long run. It's going to be a mighty interesting thing to see how this group plays out when it comes time to take the field against Marshall. It's 2010, and the receivers are locked and loaded.
