Spring Football Update

Spring Football is back
While the Men's basketball team's season is over now, Buckeye football is just now turning over a new leaf. With Terrelle Pryor, Boom Herron, DeVier Posey, and Mike Adams all having to sit out 5 games, there are many battles that will be taking place for that #1 or #2 spot on the depth chart. Here's some news so far from spring practice:

QB Terrelle Pryor is still in a walking boot on the right foot that he injured in the Sugar Bowl. He had surgery on it shortly afterward. He has indicated he will be limited to individual drills in spring practice

Safeties C.J. Barnett and Tyler Moeller both were full go in workouts, Barnett coming off knee surgery and Moeller off surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle.

The offensive linemen as a group looked to be in good shape, particularly Mike Brewster and J.B. Shugarts.

- John Simon is still one of, if not the strongest guys on the team, but in a certain 1v1 tug of war-type drill, freshman Joel Hale challenged Simon, and beat him twice in a row. Sounds to me like a good team competition is taking place on the defensive line. That will only continue to make them better.

- With Posey facing the suspension, and Sanzenbacher headed to the NFL, the question remains as to who will replace both of them. So far, Chris Fields is looking strong, and although he had a couple of issues during the season about dropping passes, he's no Taurian Washington. He's just young, but will get better as the spring drills progress.

You may think that Tressel and the rest of the Tat Five have stolen the headlines for the spring. It's possible that it may be true, but the first 5 games of the season will depend on the other headlines which include the QB position, Braxton Miller, Kenny Guiton, Joe Bauserman, and Taylor Graham all have the possibility to get a chance to start.
Jaamal Berry will try his best to earn that starting spot
Once again, the #1 spot for the running back position will be sought after, especially since Boom is down for those 5 games. I keep on saying that Jaamal Berry will make his mark before he is done with this school, but Jordan Hall, Carlos Hyde and Roderick Smith might have something to say about that. Right now, I'd still give the edge to Berry. Not so sure Hall can keep up with Hyde and Smith, but we'll have more on that later.

Linebacker will be contested for again this year, with Sabino and Sweat pretty much locking up 2 of the spots. The other spot will be left to the rest of the 2's, which include Storm Klein and Dorian Bell. I think Bell might have a leg up on Storm, but if Klein has another impressive spring then things might turn towards his favor. Bell showed glimpses of what he can do, causing fumbles and such even on special teams.

The Spring Game is just around the corner so stay tuned.
