| Chill, we got thisss |
Let’s be honest two of the more disappointing teams in the nation this year. I have been reading a lot of people saying they have no desire to watch the game, some say the Buckeyes shouldn’t even have accepted a bowl bid. Well, to them I say: “Go Away!” (I could use much stronger language, but anyone could be reading this article).
The players, on this team, not Jim Tressel, not Terrelle Pryor earned this bowl bid. 95% of the players on this team (not exact math) had absolutely nothing to do with the penalties or infractions of the past year, they were innocent bystanders caught in an awful web of lies and deceit. They fought hard all year, won a game (Wisconsin) or two that they shouldn't have, and achieved the necessary 6 wins to become bowl eligible.
Now maybe the Gator Bowl, a New Years Day (January 2nd) Bowl game, may be a bit too much, but it is what we were given, so let’s play. Another reason, besides earning the game, that the Buckeyes should play is they need the practice. They get 15 extra practices, we are a young team led by a very young true freshman QB. As great as Big Ten Freshman of the Year Braxton Miller is, he needs practice. Even with Florida’s 6-6 record they are a very good team with excellent speed (though their QB is no All-American), we need all of the practice we can to contain this speed, and to match up against an SEC defense.
Another interesting subplot to this game, is the OSU record against SEC teams in bowl games. Are we winless? Have we won 1 game? Well, it depends on how you look at it. In the eyes of every true Buckeye fan, the Buckeyes beat Arkansas straight up on the field last year. If you look at it from the NCAA’s eyes or the SEC’s (yuck) eyes that Sugar Bowl never happened.
So undoubtedly for the next few weeks, many people will troll message boards, Twitter, Facebook, and great Blogs like Eleven Warriors, and The Buckeye Battle Cry (not to mention Our Honor Defend) to say OSU has never actually beaten* (you know what the asterisk means) an SEC in a bowl game, and no matter what we say it won’t get through their little heads.
If we are going to beat an SEC team (and not have to worry about the NCAA taking it away), this could be the perfect opportunity. Even though Luke Fickell and his staff will coach the game, Urban Meyer will be 1 phone call away, there feeding information to Coach Fickell on how to win this game. He either coached or recruited about every player on the Gators, if anyone would know how to beat them, it would be the newest Buckeye Coach Urban Meyer. So let's sit back, enjoy the next 3 weeks, watch some basketball, deal with SEC fans, and get ready for the Buckeyes to officially* beat an SEC team!! Revenge will be sweet!!
