Heisman Watch: Week 2

Who will earn the respect and honor?
The Heisman trophy is well known and respected, for going to the best player (mostly) in college football. Last year we saw the actual best player win it in a landslide. This year, there are many contenders that could earn the prize. One of the keys it requires is a great team effort as well. Let's take a look at the Top 5 (From Stiff Arm Trophy) right now, and break down how they played in their Week 1 games.

5. Landry Jones, Quarterback, Oklahoma - The Sooners steam-rolled Tulsa in their first game of the season, and thanks to a loss from Oregon, secured the #1 spot. Jones went 35/47 (72% completion percentage) and 1 touchdown. His longest throw was 50 yards. Landry will be tested against some tough teams including a Top Ten showdown when Florida State comes a'callin. Last Week: --

4. Trent Richardson, Running Back, Alabama - 2 years removed from Mark Ingram taking home the trophy, Alabama fans are pushing for Trent Richardson to be the next Heisman winner. Against Kent State, Richardson didn't put up crazy numbers, and had 13 carries for 37 yards. He did however, score 3 TD's in a game that got out of hand rather quickly. A match up with Penn State will see more of him in action. Last Week: --

3. Kellen Moore, Quarterback, Boise State - The senior has been the signal caller for the Broncos in their best years of the program and holds a 39-2 record as the starting QB. His most recent, against Georgia was impressive as Moore went 28/34 (82% completion percentage) for 261 yards and 3 TD while throwing 1 interception. He started out slow in the first half, but finished very strong, and catapulted Boise into another National Championship race. Last Week: --

2. LaMichael James, Running Back, Oregon - The Oregon Ducks struggled mightily against the big, quick defense of LSU. LaMichael James had a lot of trouble as well, and it showed on 18 carries with only 54 yards and 1 TD. The big stat in my opinion was that his biggest gain was a 13 yarder. That's not the LMJ we are used to seeing perform in big games, so unless he does a quick, (and I mean quick) 180 degree turn, down he will go in the Heisman race. Last Week: --

1. Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Stanford - Andrew Luck has led this Stanford team to the Top 10, and now he looks for some prizes of his own, including a shot at the national title. It was only the San Jose State Spartans, but Andrew Luck seemed to be in mid-season form as he was 17/26 (65% completion percentage) for 171 yards and 2 TD's in the Cardinal win. He'll have to show more than that against top teams to hold the #1 spot for the rest of the season, though. Last Week: --
