Tuesday's Buckeye Bits

Happy Tuesday Buckeye fans! Glad to see you made it through another Monday. I know it’s still the dead of winter but we’re another week closer to Buckeye Football. Sure, we’re still closer to the last game of the 2011 season than the first game of next season but this is my column so leave me alone!

I’m sorry for yelling. As a token of good faith, I give you this. No need to thank me. The increased page views for ITS will suffice. I figured I already crossed into the “creepy old guy” zone last week with my comments about Urban’s daughter so might as well go all in right? Right. OK, enough of that. Let’s get to the bit’s baby!

Wismar: Recruiting Wizard. I often think about attempting to write a recruiting column but the sheer volume of research and pure insanity needed to do it right scares me off every time. The recruiting world is a dark and murky place where obsessive dudes hover over their laptops while perusing YouTube for the latest bits of shaky high school footage. I just can’t be one of those guys. Don’t get me wrong, I love those guys. I just can’t become one if I want to stay married.

There are many good bloggers out there with their finger on the pulse of this niche area of college football but none better than Dan Wismar over at The Cleveland Fan. The guy wrote a great piece the other day detailing the amazing turn around for the 2012 recruiting class. His writing is succinct, easy to read and has loads of information. If you can get past the serial killer profile picture (I kid Dan, I kid), I recommend you check out his stuff on a regular basis.

***BREAKING NEWS*** The BCS Still Sucks- While I’m whoring out a different website than my own, I might as well highlight another great article at the same address. Jesse Lamovsky gives his own version of how the BCS should change things up once the current deal mercifully ends. Lamovsky, along with the rest of us, is sick of the current bowl system and wants to see changes in the very near future. Someday college football fans will be able to enjoy a weekend like we just had in the NFL. What a glorious day that will be!

Ramzy being Ramzy- I’m sure most of you have already read the AWESOME ARTCLE by Ramzy over at 11W but if you haven’t, we aren’t internet friends anymore. We can stay friends if you drop everything and read it right now. Bosses be damned! I’ve been complaining about the bias at ESecPN for months now and Ramzy does a fantastic job of sounding way smarter than I ever could. It’s a must read.

The End of an Era- Joe Paterno didn’t stand a chance of surviving after the recent scandal at Penn St. I don’t mean to sound harsh or insensitive but the Nittany Lions were everything to the guy and once that was taken away, it was only a matter of time. He was and always will be a college football icon but his reputation is tarnished forever. His actions, or lack thereof, during the Sandusky scandal are inexcusable. I’m sure if JoePa could turn back the clock he would’ve handled the allegations differently but you only get one chance at doing the right thing in these types of situations.

His legacy will always be tied to those horrible events that transpired under his watch and within his walls. It’s a shame that all the good done by the man will end up being tarnished due to his “turn the other way” mentality in this instance. PSU will be reeling for years. Especially if Urban keeps stealing guys like this

That’s it for today folks. Before I go, I just wanted to do a little shameless self-promotion. Ian does a great job on Twitter keeping everyone up to date on the latest Buckeye news. Make sure you follow ITS here. While I’m at it, if you like lots of bitching about Cleveland related sports, random Ohio St. thoughts and semi-coherent tweets at 2am, follow me @bucknut1981. Have a great day and keep it locked to ITS!
