VTech shuts out Vols in second half for 37-14 win

VTech freshman RB Ryan Williams set all kinds of records in the Georgia Dome yesterday as the Hokies trounced the Vols 37-14 for an emphatic win. He had 25 carries for 117 yards and 2 TDs. The Vols had no answer to his running game. The Vols didn't have an answer to many things and looked out of sorts throughout the game.

The Hokies, ironically had begun their season in the same Georgia dome playing and losing to Bama in the kickoff classic in week 1. There was redemption for them yesterday.

Tyrod Taylor, the VTech QB gashed the Ten defense for 209 yards on just 10 completions including a long bomb to end the first half. Or almost end it. The Vols had regained some of the momentum going into the half with the score at 14-14 when the refs ruled that the long pass was caught with 2 secs left on the Vols 4 yard line. The Hokies kicked the FG, regained the momentum and the lead 17-14 and would not look back.

The game will hopefully silence, at least for a few hours, the SEC homers who chant SEC speed, SEC defense mantras endlessly. One of the premier programs in the SEC had no defense yesterday to the pass or the run. And VTech WRs, DEs, RBs beat the Vols in pure speed the entire day.

With 2 more games for the ACC to play, the conference is 2-3 in the postseason. With 7 more games left to play, the SEC is 1-2 in the post season so far.

Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Williams and the stable of RBs all return for the Hokies next year and should be ranked high pre-season. They are likely to play Boise in the kickoff classic which could well define their season in week 1. As for Lane Kiffin and the Vols, all that can be said is - Talk is cheap. Lane needs to deliver on the field soon.
