The big name on the recruiting trail right now is Doran Grant. Grant, a defensive back and wide receiver, is one of the top recruits coming out of the state of Ohio. Grant excels on both sides of the ball, but is currently being recruited to play cornerback. He's 5'10'' and 175 pounds, and one of the fastest players that lives in the state. He is a track star at his school, giving him great speed in open field. I wouldn't be surprised to see him ending up as a kick returner/punt returner if he comes here. Doran made his official visit to Ohio State over the weekend, saying:
"It was nice, I enjoyed everything," Grant said. "My mom and dad enjoyed it too. They talked to coach [Jim] Tressel. It went good. I got a lot of questions answered like playing time, opportunities, and non-football stuff. They said I'd have the opportunity to compete for playing time and possibly start."Grant has received offers from some of the best schools in the country including USC, Notre Dame, Miami (FL), Michigan, LSU, Penn State, and Michigan State. As of right now, he is decieding between Ohio State and Michigan State. MSU has a bit of a rope with him, because his dad played for them while he was there, so Michigan State is going to be holding on for the whole ride, but there is no doubt in my mind that OSU sits in the driver's seat.
Curtis Grant, a 5 star linebacker, has finished his official visit to Ohio State, and it seems he came away very impressed:
"Here's what I love about Ohio State: what you see is what you get. They are so humble there and there isn't a whole bunch of extra stuff. They are just chill and they don't force you to commit or anything. I really like that. It's an awesome place. It is so nice and everybody is so cool. It was still fun even though like half of the students weren't there."This is good news for Buckeye fans, as Curtis is one of the top uncommitted recruits in the country, and coming out of the state of Virgina, it seems Grant is down to Florida and Ohio State. While Florida will have the last visit on January 14th, Curtis was also a huge fan of Tressel when he came away from it:
"He's the funniest guy ever. He's kind of corny but I like it. His personality is actually like mine. He acts goofy all the time but he's serious on the practice field. There wasn't even anything in particular that was funny. He just messes with people all the time and it was cracking me up."It just so happens that Ryan Shazier, the Buckeye that decommitted from Florida to come to Ohio State, is good friends with Curtis, and they have been texting over the weekend. Grant says he hasn't tried to recruit him yet, but it did surprise him that Shazier ended up with OSU. We'll see how this plays out, but you've got to like OSU's chances.
Finally, LS Bryce Haynes also had his official visit this weekend, but there are rumors that Notre Dame has the reins in this recruitment. The Irish offered him, and Haynes is leaning heavily towards them, but Tressel did offer a long snapper, the first one ever. What with Special Teams being his "thing" Tressel might need to step his game up to pick Bryce up. He's the top long snapper in the country, and this video has pretty much gone viral.
