Texas A&M Vying For SEC, Gets Turned Down

Not going to happen. For now.

Thursday evening, Aggieyell.com reported that Texas A&M is on its way to the SEC, pending approval by Board of Regents at an August 15th meeting and final SEC approval by league presidents. Obviously, it did not go through like A&M expected. University of Florida president Bernie Machen, the chairman of the league's presidents and chancellors committee, said the group met Sunday and reaffirmed the satisfaction of the present 12 institutional alignment. Machen also said no action was taken regarding Texas A&M or any other schools. He didn't, however, close the door on change. 

Two weeks ago, Slive and SEC lawyers met with A&M officials, when the league requested that the school work out the possible legal ramifications surrounding its contract with the Big 12, the report said. The Board of Directors for the Big 12 held a conference call Saturday to discuss Texas A&M's plans.

As many of you know, the summer of 2010 was a monumental one for college football. No team was safe in the expansion move, as virtually every team was a potential move. Notre Dame, Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, Pitt, TCU, Boise State, and more were the favorites to be moving. Nebraska moved to the Big Ten, while TCU headed to the Big East, and BSU fell into place in the Mountain West. There were more moves, such as Colorado to the Pac 10, as well as Utah joining the same conference.

There was also fear for every team, as we weren't sure whether or not the traditional college landscape would collapse, and we would move to 2 Super conferences with 16 or more teams. Surprisingly, the SEC didn't budge. Now, with that, it brings us to today's news.

TCU To Join Big East, 2012-2013 Season

Update #1 10:16 AM EST: According to Joe Schad, TCU will announce their joining the conference 2 PM EST, 1 PM CT.

TCU is now accepting membership into the Big East, in all sports. They will join in the 2012-2013 season. An announcement will likely come early this week. It might not make much sense right now, but it's designed to add another football school that's actually good into the Big East, which hasn't been good as of late.


This would now mean that TCU is in a BCS school, which means they get an automatic bid once they join, if they win the conference. 


"The Big East had said a few weeks ago it wanted to get its football membership to 10 teams. The league also made an offer to Villanova, a member in all sports but football, to move up from FCS to the Big East."


"The current four-year evaluation period for the BCS concludes in December 2011, so TCU's past BCS rankings – three consecutive top 11 BCS rankings, including this year – will transfer to the Big East since it joined the league before the 2012-13 school year.

The current 2008-11 evaluation period is being used to determine if a seventh conference earns automatic qualifying status for the 2012 and 2013 regular seasons – and the Mountain West (TCU's current home) will not qualify. The Big East, however, already has its automatic qualifying status for the 2012 and 2013 regular seasons by virtue of the contracts, Hancock said.

Adding TCU also would strengthen its position when the league starts renegotiating its television contracts that expires after the 2013 season."

USC Board of Trustees informed of extended invite to Utah.

My thoughts on the matter are twofold: Big win for Utah, and a Big Meh for the Pac10. Utah has been a rising program with two recent BCS appearances. The move to the Pac10 will give them an outright shot at a BCS game every year, no more wondering and sitting on the edges of their seats for what bowl game they're going to.

"Meh" for the Pac10. After a big swing and a miss on the whole Texas and everyone else thing, this seems like settling. I get it, Utah has become a more legit program of late, but it's not like stealing half of the Big12. Besides, this was the original rumor months ago: Colorado and Utah to the Pac10. In all actuality Utah could very well win the Pac10 year in and year out unless Washington or UCLA continues their respective come backs. With USC being dealt a kick in the junk and Oregon's mess at QB and RB Utah could walk in and dominate right away, and potentially expose the Pac10 to the rest of the nation as just another "Big" East clone.

Update 2: ESPN is confirming all of this, and Utah is supposed to announce their leaving Friday.

Update Numero Tres: Colorado Atheltic Director confirms North/South Divisions for the new Pac-whatever, Utah to be in North, Colorado to somehow be in the south with Teams like ASU, UofA, USC, and UCLA.

Texas A&M is headed to the SEC according to reports by thier regents at the school.
Texas has been reported as agreeing to a 10 team Big 12.

Nebraska has accepted the invitation to join the Big T1E2N. Wonder how those divisions will line up.. Time for a logo redesign? New Name?

Boise State joins the MW.

In breaking news, Boise State joins the Mountain West as it's 10th member, and will play in the MW in the 2011 season.

"Broncos coach Chris Petersen, who has compiled a 49-4 record and won three WAC titles in four years, said Monday the decision doesn't change anything about his plans for next season.

"We have a very challenging non-conference and conference schedule ahead of us and we are not planning to change our goals because of today's decision," he said."

Oklahoma State is going to announce they are leaving for Pac 10.

"High level sources in multiple conferences have told KCTV5 that Texas and Texas A&M are looking to move to the Big Ten Conference and are in talks to join the conference as early as tomorrow, while the University of Oklahoma is planning on petitioning the Southeastern Conference to become a member of its conference"

More Expansion Chances.

When Nebraska decided to join the Big Ten, and Colorado and OK State(?) chose the Pac 10, you had to wonder what would happen to the rest of the Big 12, and the college landscape. Here's what I think will happen.



First off, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and OK State (already there) will join the Pac 10. There, I said it, even though I hate it. Giving Oklahoma and especially Texas to the Pac 10 is like giving a dictator nuclear bombs. The Pac 10 will be strong. The thing that happens next will even it out a bit.

With that, the Big Ten will try to add Notre Dame, seeing the power brewing from the Pac-Whatever. If, and only if Notre Dame accepts, will the Big Ten then take Missouri to even out the divisions again. Everything else will stay exactly the same. I could see Kansas, Baylor, and Kansas State going independent. I don't see any other scenario playing out except maybe Kansas bolting to a weaker conference. After that the divisions of the Big Ten will take place. For more on that, head over to this post from the Rivalry Esq.
