My childhood Icon retires.

Ken Griffey Jr. has retired, and an era of amazing ends. Jr was always my favorite baseball player, and now I have to say goodbye. A trip to Cooperstown is inevitable. I love it, but some sadness is still there. Here's the story.

"The 40-year-old Griffey told the Mariners that he was done playing, and manager Don Wakamatsu made the announcement before Seattle faced Minnesota.

"While I feel I am still able to make a contribution on the field and nobody in the Mariners front office has asked me to retire, I told the Mariners when I met with them prior to the 2009 season and was invited back that I will never allow myself to become a distraction," Griffey said in a statement.

"I feel that without enough occasional starts to be sharper coming off the bench, my continued presence as a player would be an unfair distraction to my teammates and their success as a team is what the ultimate goal should be," he said.
Griffey was hitting only .184 with no homers and seven RBIs this year and recently went a week without playing. There was a report earlier this season -- which Griffey denied -- that he'd fallen asleep in the clubhouse during a game.



Griffey was a perennial All-Star outfielder and ranks fifth on the career home run list with 630. He won an MVP award and was a Gold Glover. The only thing missing on his resume was a trip to the World Series.
A star from the get-go, he played 22 years in the majors with Seattle, his hometown Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox. He hit .284 lifetime with 1,836 RBIs. For a time in the 1990s, he was considered the best player in baseball"

Reddies are on fire!

How about those Reds? I have been a Reds fan all of my life, and this is one of the best starts for us in a long time. We are 23-16, 1st in the NL Central, and have a .590 percentage of winning. We are currently on a streak of 4, and the last 10, we have won 9. Mike Leake is undefeated, 4-0, with an OK ERA of 3.09. The chemistry is there, and Dusty Baker hasn't even brought up the Cuban superstar named Aroldis Chapman. He throws a 100 mph fastball, and apparently is just right under Strasburg as the best pitcher not in the MLB yet. Yesterday Joey Votto, our go to hitter, hit a walk in single into right field giving the Reds a 5-4 victory against the Brewers. It keeps the streak alive for now, and I hope it continues. Savor the sound of "Reds are in 1st place for the NL Central". I hate to say it, but I still don't think it will last. The Cards are just too good. Hey, for right now we can celebrate. I hope they can continue on and at least try for the Wild Card. As for the status of Chapman, he is currently at Triple A, so one more jump, and he will be in the Red's uniform.

While we wait..

While we are waiting for Ohio State news to report for you guys, let's give you a break down of what's happening around the Buckeye sphere.

First, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Santonio Holmes for a 5th round pick. Let me say that again, a fifth round pick. I know this is fairly old news by now, but come on! I know he had a mediocre year last year, but he still won you the Super Bowl just 2 years ago. I would think he deserves better than that. Not only did he get traded, he got traded to the New York Jets. Normally, I wouldn't care much about that, but this is a team that is getting more dangerous by the second. As for the Bengals, they are going to have a tough time competing with them next year, and I think the rest of the NFL might to.

Your getting rid of this???

Evan Turner is going to be a Harlem Globetrotter tonight. He is testing his skills, and having a little bit of fun, while he waits for the NBA draft. It will be cool to see him at the Value City Arena making flashy moves, and of course, winning. (Do the Globetrotters ever lose?) I think it's a good thing for him, as it will keep him working hard to get that first pick. I don't know where he will end up, but my guess is the Timberwolves, just because he will be right behind Wall in the draft, although I hate to say it. Turner is the best overall player this year, and there is no doubt about it.

Finally, the Reds are doing just fine, winning in extra innings last night to the Florida Marlins, 6-5. They stand ranked at 18th in the MLB, which isn't too bad. They have won 3 straight now, though.
